I saw a few interesting boats during my ferry ride to Vancouver.

The GDC was hosted at the new Convention Centre built for the 2010 Olympics.

The new centre has some nice views across the bay.

The inside has some interesting views too.

The interior walls are made of wood and seem to be designed to look like stacked up piles of lumber with uneven ends.

Even the doors have the lumber-end design.

The centre has a nice view of Canada Place which is right next door.

Here are some more shots of the new Convention Centre...

I also attended the Canadian GDC while at the Convention Centre.

I listened to some talks by industry professionals like Dr. Greg Zeschuk and Dr. Ray Muzyka from Bioware, the guys behind the Baldur's Gate games, Mass Effect and the upcoming Dragon's Age (among others).

My favourite talk was about indie game development by Jamie Chang, the young CEO of Klei Entertainment.

I also saw some Video Game "celebrities" such as Victor Lucas (second from left), the host of the Electric Playground TV show.

I saw some demos of upcoming new games too, like the Wii's new Punch Out game.

The convention and trip in general gave me much inspiration and many ideas to build on.

I see what you did there with the last photo and your caption!
I didn't realize they gave out doctorates to video game people now but I suppose that makes sense with how huge the industry is. Which universities are handing out the button mashing doctorate degrees?
Hehe, those are no made up doctorates, they both have degrees in medicine from the University of Alberta, interestingly enough.
The closest you can come to a "video game" degree is computer science or art. Some instituations offer specialized degrees that focus on game development, but they are still very much degrees in their usual dicipline (computer science, art, etc).
